Workshop

In this generative workshop, we will draw on guidance from poets Denise Levertov and Mary Oliver, as we explore different containers for our experiences. We will move from organic form through free verse to formal patterns, such as the cinquain and rondeau, to see our experiences take shape in new ways.

This course is designed to 1) discover something tucked away in your memory that’s story-worthy, and 2) start telling some lies about it.

In this workshop, participants will come to love their inner editors and learn that editing can be fun. We’ll begin by looking first at other writers’ work, then move on to participants’ work.

Linked Poetry: Traditional and New Approaches is a poetry workshop for writers of all levels and ages who are looking to collaborate! We will begin with haiku writing exercises and build different styles of linked poems step by step. It is a highly interactive, hands-on workshop. Come with a writing partner or on your own.

In this workshop, we will explore the connections between food, memory, and poetry. Come with 1-2 dishes and memories associated with them in mind. If you have a family recipe you’d like to explore, bring that too.

Learn the differences between traditional, hybrid, and Indie publishing and how to decide which is the best option for your manuscript.

Need alone is not enough to win grants. Led by Penny Federspill, Grants Make Cents will provide the basic skills needed to learn the essential elements of successful grant writing. These elements include methods of finding an appropriate grant funder, from your own backyard to paid research data firms.

In this workshop, Beating the Numbers Game: Submissions Strategies led by Amber Wheeler Bacon, we discuss what it’s like as a literary magazine editor moving through the slush pile: sins we’re willing to forgive, and those we’re not.

In this workshop, we’ll discuss how imaginative unions in poems can lead to insight. We’ll look at poems like Billy Collins’ “Hippos on Holiday” or Heid E. Erdrich’s “Indigenous Elvis at the Airport” to see the effect of the juxtaposition of the ordinary and the unexpected. As a generative exercise, we’ll also do a writing activity to inspire the beginnings of such a poem.

In this workshop, Expose & Compose: Photographic Prompts led by Amber Wheeler Bacon, we use a combination of professional and amateur photography, including our own family photos, in conversation with poems and short prose to generate creative new work.

This interactive writers workshop will be held at the Pat Conroy Literary Center (601 Bladen St., Beaufort) on Tuesday, September 24, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Led by an award-winning memoirist and novelist, Estelle Ford-Williamson, this workshop is for those who want to put in writing their cache of family legends or happenings, for the memoir writer, and for those who want to assist their parents or relatives or friends in doing just that.
