DESCRIPTION:Saturday December 21\, 2024 – 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm EDT\nPrice: Free\nVenue: Beaufort County Main Library (311 Scott St.\, Beaufort) \nWebsite: Facebook Event Page \nJoin the student volunteers of DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization for a special bonus holiday Teddy Bear Picnic read-aloud at the Beaufort County Main Library (311 Scott St.\, Beaufort) on Saturday\, December 21\, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. \nIn collaboration with the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center\, high school and college student volunteers from the Beaufort-based chapters of DAYLO will read from diverse\, inclusive picture books to children and their families–including a special selection of some of DAYLO’s favorite holiday books. \nCozy blankets and a plethora of stuffed animals make a welcoming environment in this free community literacy program. \nDAYLO is a student-led diversity themed book club and community service group founded at Beaufort High School and now with chapters across South Carolina. Baldwin\nLowcountry native William P. Baldwin is being recognized for his work in poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction. His best-known novel\, The Hard to Catch Mercy\, was awarded the Lillian Smith Book Award. Most recently\, he has published The Unpainted South: Carolina’s Vanishing World\, a collection of songs\, photographs\, and poems\, as well as the novel Charles Town.

This special event will also include recognition of the 2024 winner of the Ann Head Literary Prize at Beaufort High School. Free\, advance registration required. \nThe South Carolina Academy of Authors (SCAA)\, in partnership with the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, will hold its biennial induction weekend in Beaufort this May 3-5. \nAbout Ann Head\nThe SCAA recognizes authors both living and deceased\, and\, this year\, will be posthumously celebrating fiction writer Ann Head (1915-1968). She published several novels as well as over 50 short stories and novelettes in major magazines both here and abroad. Her most famous\, Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones\, was made into a TV movie and stayed in print for four decades. Head was also the first creative writing mentor to Pat Conroy (1945-2016)\, who was himself inducted into the literary hall of fame in 1988.
