We invite you to join us, whether you are a longtime fan of Pat Conroy or new to his work, as we carry on his passionate mission of promoting and celebrating reading, writing, and the literary arts. With your support, we can ensure that future generations continue to benefit from the transformative power of words.

As Pat once said, “When I started out as a kid in Beaufort who wanted to be a writer, I didn’t have the slightest notion how to become one… What I owe South Carolina is not repayable.”

Pat Conroy passed away on March 4, 2016. His ultimate gift was to remind us all of the remarkable ability of one person to change the world through storytelling. Together, we can honor his legacy and inspire creativity for years to come.

Why Beaufort, South Carolina?

Beaufort, with its picturesque beauty and rich history, is a fitting home for the Pat Conroy Literary Center. This charming Lowcountry town, with its antebellum mansions, oak-lined streets, and vibrant cultural tapestry, has long served as inspiration for writers, artists, and dreamers. Pat’s deep connection to Beaufort is woven throughout his stories, painting a vivid portrait of a place where diverse cultures and experiences converge.

As Janis Owens writes, “Is it any wonder that such a culturally fecund slice of earth has sustained the career of so many writers, the most famous, by far, beloved adopted son Pat Conroy?”

Join us in celebrating the magic of Beaufort and the literary legacy of Pat Conroy as we inspire future generations to explore the world of literature and writing. Together, let’s continue to share the stories that shape our lives and our communities.
