On March 16th, Tara Powell will discuss The World Is Round, the third volume of poetry from the National Book Award-winning writer Nikky Finney, the John H. Bennett Jr. Chair of Southern Letters and Creative Writing at the University of South Carolina. The World Is Round carries with it an implicit challenge—to the author as a poet, and to the reader as a fellow human—to see the characters and details and events of our lives with clarity, fearlessness, and love. The poet’s vision of community requires understanding and tolerance from every breathing soul.

This series of three 90-minute workshops, Reading as “Reading the Room” approaches the immersive act of reading as a vehicle of self-reflection and empathy--as moral character practice--as well as textual analysis and enjoyment of story. Participants will be guided through an active and interactive approach to close readings of three short stories, engaging with the texts and with one another for a deeper appreciation of both and seeking the inspiration and revelation only great stories can provide. The workshop readings will be Annie Dillard's "The Wreck of Time," Primo Levi's "Force Majeur," and J.M. Coetzee's "The Lives of Animals." Reading in advance of each workshops is required. One meeting per week for three weeks.
