Writing as Healing: Poetry and Grief

Therapists often suggest journaling as a way forward when grieving the loss of a loved one. For a writer, the choice seems a natural one. Yet Elizabeth Robin found expressing emotions in this way impossible when her only brother and her beloved husband both fell ill and died within a two-year span. Then she discovered she could store and express those feelings in two ways: through poems and in essays written in third person. The poems became her first book, Silk Purses and Lemonade. This workshop models the journaling process, how this transforms to poetry, and why poems offer a useful outlet for grief, and a way to offer solace to others grieving similar losses...

African American Women, Literary Voices, and Spiritual Wholeness

The journeys of African American women are found in literature of all kinds, fiction and nonfiction, songs and plays, written poetry and spoken word. Spirituality is an integral part in telling our stories along those journeys. As African American women find their own voices, the stories they share also serve to foster spiritual wholeness. Presented by Dr. Stephanie Y. Mitchem (USC), this talk will explore the ways African American women create communal meaning and personal identities while naming their concepts of faith and salvation.

The Pat Conroy Literary Center, in partnership with the Beaufort County Library System, presents CAROLINA ON MY MIND, a five-book Let’s Talk about It discussion series supported by a grant from South Carolina Humanities. Each free public event will feature a different visiting scholar or discussion leader presenting on book representative of the South Carolina experience. Copies of all five books featured in this series will be available for circulation through Beaufort County Library’s main branch, thanks in part to the South Carolina State Library.
